Media Release: Mayor Corroon launches campaign to be the next Governor of Utah!
01-12-10 - Campaign Announcement
Salt Lake City, UT – With an enthusiastic crowd of bipartisan supporters, Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon launched his campaign to be the next Governor of Utah at Salt Lake Community College.
"I am running for governor to restore the values of our great state, so that we can get back to the basics on which this state was founded – a small, honest and effective government," stated Corroon in his announcement speech.
Corroon centered on the importance of providing core government services to all of Utah's constituents – general and higher education, job growth and economic development. Focusing on the basics, Corroon outlined a broad overview of how focusing on education, supporting local business, and supplementing Utah's existing energy section with a renewable energy economy can move Utah forward and make the state the powerhouse of the west.
Mayor Corroon also emphasized the importance of having an independent voice in the Governor's Office. As Chief Executive of the state's second largest government, Peter Corroon has made a name for himself as an independent and fiscal conservative, having reduce the County budget by nearly 20% while protecting core government services during his tenure and vetoing a proposed tax increase by the Democratic County Council.
"I am also entering this race to be an independent voice for the citizens of Utah," stated Mayor Corroon. "An independent voice that puts people and principles above party and politics. An independent voice for reasonable and responsible government."
Peter Corroon was first elected Salt Lake County Mayor in November 2004, taking on the concerns of over one million constituents, a budget of roughly $750 million, and a county infrastructure of 36 agencies and nearly seven thousand employees. As Mayor, Peter Corroon emphasizes "planning, not politics." He consistently prioritizes quality government through fiscally responsible policies that reflect his goal of an open, honest, and ethical government. He was overwhelming re-elected in 2008, with 66 percent of the vote.
