About Peter Corroon
Peter and Amy choose to live in Utah because of the values, traditions, and history that the people of the state share: a pioneering spirit, the importance of family, education, community, and Utah’s amazing landscape, natural, and rural areas. He has three children, Sophie, Peter, and James.
Planning, not Politics – Peter’s Approach to Government
Peter Corroon was elected Salt Lake County Mayor in November 2004, taking on the concerns of over one million constituents, a budget of roughly $750 million, and a county infrastructure of 36 agencies and nearly seven thousand employees. As Mayor, Peter Corroon emphasizes “planning, not politics.” He consistently prioritizes quality government through fiscally responsible policies that reflect his goal of an open, honest, and ethical government. He was re-elected in 2008, with an overwhelming 66 percent of the vote.
Economic development, particularly building policies and relationships that create opportunities for small and medium sized businesses, as well as large corporations, has been a priority for Mayor Corroon. As a result of his leadership, Forbes Magazine rated Salt Lake as number one location for jobs in the United States in 2007 and 2008 and, after his first year in office, Salt Lake County reported a growth of over 19,500 new jobs. The favorable economic conditions that the Mayor has helped to create have proved invaluable as the county continues to weather the economic crisis with unemployment rates that are lower than the national average.
Mayor Corroon recognizes that one of Utah’s greatest assets is our environment, on which much of our vital tourism and hospitality industry depends. As mayor, Salt Lake County has been at the forefront in encouraging LEED-certified construction, creating and expanding hiking trails and bike paths, pursing curbside recycling, establishing the One Million Trees for One Million People initiative, and the protection of open space for future generations.
